     The picturesque "Agios Georgios Nilias" is located at the center of Pelion, its only 22 kilometers from the capital of Volos, at an altitude of 680 meters and it’s the highest and oldest village in Pelion, two things that very few people know. It is situated between two mountain ridges, under the top of the mountain and it is built amphitheatrically with a panoramic view to the Pagasetic Gulf, where they extend up to the sea, the rest of its settlements (Ano Gatzea, Agia Triada, Kato Gatzea).

     The place where the village is standing is wealthy with rich vegetation, full of oak trees, chestnut trees and platan trees…as well as apple trees, cherry trees, pear trees and a lot of other treasures of the nature, flowers and herbs, mushrooms, depending on the season. The privileged geographical position of the village, makes Agios Georgios the ideal place for people to explore the whole peninsula of Pelion, mountainous and seaside, something that the visitor can easily understand by looking at the position of the village on the map.


The village has a rich historical route and a long tradition hosting, nobility and wealth. The special characteristic though of Agios Georgios, is that besides the beauty and rich cultural heritage, it has the luck of remaining untouched from the touristic masses, preserving its identity and all of those traditional elements that makes it unique, claiming by the years lot of fans and "sophisticated" travellers, between them a lot of foreign visitors and artists who have bought and renovated many of its traditional houses.

It has a particular architectural character, famous crystalline water fountains with beneficial properties and many sightseeing spots. The village offers one of the most beautiful walks on "kalderimia" (stone paved paths) which lead to traditional mansions, unique natural landscapes and running waters and one of the most picturesque square of Pelion. At the same time there are cultural events that take place usually the summer, while the traditional taverns offer local food with local "tsipouro" and wine.

The activities are many depending on the season, from hiking to the marked tracks and "kalderimia", horseriding, up to mountain bike, water sports, extreme sports, 4x4 routes etc. For ski fans, the ski resort is about 30 km, while in the summer the village, besides the height, has a great access to the sea, at 15' minutes to the Pagasetic Gulf and at 30'minutes to Aegean. At the same time, it is very close to the main town of Volos, rewarding with the seasonal changes even the most demanding visitors. Agios Georgios Nilias is the ideal place for nature lovers and for relaxation, for people who look for the authentic experience of Pelion, away from the crowds.
